Get ready to spread some holiday cheer by volunteering at the Turkey Trot! This fun community event will take place at Hare Field, and we need your help to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Celebrate the winter season at Jackson Bottom during this winter themed event, which may be outside so dress for weather!  You'll help set up and staff the HPL booth, give away books, keep count of booth visits, talk about library resources then help tear down the booth and pack it away.  Baby goats are possible guests!

Apartment complex outreach event inviting families to do a fun drop in craft, get a free book, share information about programs and library services.  Bi lingual Spanish is helpful but not required.  Must enjoy working withhigh energy kiddos!  Help with set up and pack out. 

Host library table focused on book giveaways; chat with families about library cards, services/programs, help kids find a book they'll love, assist with the set up and pack up of the library display. 

Help set up the room and then help with the activities, such as games or crafts, as people celebrate the memory of those who are no longer with us, help stock the craft tables, and clean up at the end.  This joyous and colorful tradition is one of the most meaningful celebrations in the Mexican culture.

The Senior Center Greeter is the first point of contact for all visitors, providing a warm and welcoming environment to older adults, families, and community members. This role is crucial in ensuring that everyone who walks through the door feels seen, heard, and guided with respect and professionalism. As a Greeter, you will help create a positive and vibrant atmosphere by assisting guests in finding the events or activities they’re seeking, answering questions, and connecting them with additional resources or information as needed.

Your customer service skills, friendly demeanor, and passion for supporting the Hillsboro community will help you embody the mission and values of the City of Hillsboro. You will be a representative of the Senior Center’s dedication to fostering an inclusive, accessible, and supportive space for all.

Help us showcase all the amazing things available through our library!  The wellness fair is for City employees to learn about their benefits, which includes the access city employees have to programs and services provided by our community centers, our libraries, and other partner programs.  Two shifts available, in the morning you'll help set up the table and then help hand out information and answer questions, second shift you'll be handing out info and answering questions and helping to pack everything up.

Help us showcase all the amazing things available through our library!  You'll share your enthusiasm for our library services, guide our patrons through our outreach book selection and encourage them to get a library card.  There may also be a simple craft activity to help with.  You'll help set up the display and then help pack up at the end.

Help librarian set up the storytime area, assist as directed to help engage and focus attendees, help facilitate any activities or crafts, and help clean up the space after storytime.  This storytime is focused on children who experience the world differently, they attend with their caregivers and may have special sensory needs this type of activity is designed to address.  Experience working with differently abled students and caregivers helpful, but not necessary.  Guidance from the librarian is provided. A caring, patient, friendly personality is essential.

Help set up chairs, greet patrons, keep count of attendees, and help stack chairs at the end.  

Amigurumi is a style of Japanese crochet.  In this class, you'll help patrons create their very own adorable plushie, a piece of holiday pie!  Volunteers should have crochet knowledge, be patient, and supportive to help patrons accomplish the craft.  You'll help with set up and clean up too.

Assist instructor as directed as patrons are introduced to the joy of 3-D printing.  You may help set up the room, prep the machines, and be on hand to support patron in their learning adventure, then help clean up at the end.  Some experience using 3-D printers is highly suggested, plus an ability to patiently and enthusiastically support learners.  

Join the fun celebrating all things Latin America!  Volunteers help with some room set up, welcoming patrons, counting participants, helping with the loteria and papel picado activities, then help clean up the room. Bi lingual skills not required. 

Lots to do to turn the event room into an Asian heritage festival!  Come help decorate, set up tables, chairs, and activities.  Some lifting (the heaviest would be the chairs which are a couple of pounds), bending, reaching, stretching.  Lots of being on your feet for a couple hours, but moving all the time.

The second Wednesday of each month teens (ages 10-18) are invited to enjoy a program built for them!  Volunteers assist staff in setting up the room, facilitating activities, or playing games, talking, and otherwise facilitating a warm, welcoming, inclusive atmosphere.  Programs may have a craft component, there may be games to be played, or sometimes even a guest presenter.  The shift time reflects the time needed to set up and take down the room, plus the actual event time.  

Assist librarian with set up and support for the first Friday of every month Teen get together.  The program is designed for ages 10-18 who come together to enjoy various activities including crafts, playing games, watching movies, and just hanging out.  Volunteers who love working with this age group and can be a kind and positive point of contact who models pro-social behavior will do well in this task.  You'll help set up the program, clean up at the end and facilitate as directed.  The shift accounts for the set up and clean up time.  The program itself runs from 4-5:30. 

Help prepare the materials that will be used in the First Friday Teen Time program.  Volunteers may help cut, measure, portion, sort, etc. mostly craft materials.  This opportunity is intended for people who are also volunteering for the First Friday Teen Time program.  

Help patrons celebrate this Asian cultural harvest festival also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival.  It is marked by the full moon symbolizing prosperity and good fortune.  You'll help with welcoming patrons, facilitating simple crafts, and cleaning up.

Help with our October 4 donation event to collect supplies for our maker spaces at both locations.  Volunteers help with setting up the tents, tables, bins to receive donations, and then help greet our drive up patrons, help unload their donations, and then help sort the donations as directed.  Then at the end, help bring everything inside and take down the tents, tables etc.  Should be physically able to do some lifting (up to 20 pounds) to bend, lift, twist, grasp, sort, etc.  This donation drive is accepting all types of craft supplies from perler beads to fabric.  Staff will help you understand how to sort and process the donations.  It's not necessary to know a lot about crafting, but it is helpful to have some sense of what happens in our maker spaces, but for sure to have a great customer service attitude.  This event happens rain or shine.  Dress for weather (we have rain ponchos if needed). 

Help families engineer their amazing cardboard creations!  Using cardboard, duct tape, crayons, glue, staplers and imagination help kids and adults build a cardboard creation.  Volunteers help by keeping the cardboard ready, you are the ones with the box cutters, you have the tape/glue inventory, and you provide the encouragment.  Lots to do for volunteers who love to engage with creative kids!

Key Responsibilities:

The Monumental Moments Living History Tour invites community members to explore Hillsboro Pioneer Cemetery and learn about the lives—and untimely deaths—of early Hillsboro residents from more than a century ago. Guides escort guests through the cemetery, where actors portray historical figures and share their stories.

Volunteer Role
Tour Guides will lead groups of 10+ guests along a set route lasting about 50 minutes. Volunteers will receive a lanyard, training, and an event pamphlet to orient themselves with the map, tour route, and program content. In addition to guiding, volunteers may assist with light support tasks such as delivering water or snacks to actors.

Requirements

Must be at least 16 years old.

Attend training and orientation on-site at 11:45 am.

Wear black pants and a white shirt, or period clothing if available. Comfortable shoes are required due to uneven ground.

Commit to the full event schedule: 11:45 am–5 pm (includes training, guiding, a short break, and event clean-up).

Help us protect one of Hillsboro’s most beautiful natural areas! Volunteers will work together to remove invasive English ivy from around trees and along trails at Noble Woods Park. This hands-on project helps improve habitat for native plants and wildlife. All tools and gloves will be provided.

Please wear long sleeves, closed-toe shoes, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Great for teens, adults, and small groups who enjoy outdoor work.

Make a visible difference in your community! Volunteers will meet at Shute Park and walk one of three group routes to collect litter in surrounding areas. Routes include:

Shute to Dairy Creek Park (~1.6 miles round-trip)

Shute to Walnut Street Park (~1.2 miles round-trip)

Shute to Bagley Park (~2 miles round-trip)

We’ll provide grabbers, gloves, vests, and trash bags. This is a great project for all ages and a fun way to walk and give back at the same time. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle.

Join us to learn all about Hillsboro's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)!

*Attendees must attend class on BOTH October 23, 2025 and October 28, 2025*

Hillsboro’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. 

This 8-hour introductory course is offered in two, four-hour classes and is mostly in a classroom setting. This introductory course is open to anyone interested in learning how they can prepare for an emergency as well as those interested in becoming part of the Community Emergency Response Team.

Simple science is a hands on mini science event held once a month alternating between the two libraries. Volunteers help the STEM librarian with setting up the science activity tables, helping patrons experience the hands on science, and then staying to clean up and put away the supplies.  These events typically attract older toddlers to about grade 3, are very popular, and can be somewhat chaotic and loud. Some parents are more engaged then others so volunteers must be proactive in looking for opportunities to help little learners who may not understand the concept and need help accomplishing the hands on task. Position Overview: The Hillsboro Community Senior Center receives donations from Trader Joe’s on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and New Seasons Market every Tuesday. Volunteer drivers use City of Hillsboro vehicles. Employees at the stores can help move donations into the trunk. Unloading typically ends around 10 am at the Community Senior Center.

Position Overview: Food Distribution Line volunteers are invaluable members of our team, playing a crucial role in the post-lunch food distribution of donated foods at the City of Hillsboro. In this registered volunteer position, Ambassadors are responsible for sorting foods from boxes to ice bins or reorganizing foods to facilitate easy patron choice selection. Please note that some food boxes may individually weigh as much as 20 pounds, which may limit some volunteers during this part of the process.

Position Overview: Volunteers are needed to serve meals, monitor the salad bar, assist the hostess with seating, keep the beverage station stocked, and work with kitchen staff to ensure all patrons are served in a timely, effective manner. A commitment of once per week is preferred.

Position Overview: As a Hostess Volunteer, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our weekday lunch service. Your primary responsibilities will include handling lunch payments, distributing place mats, and managing the cash box. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the well-being of our community and support our mission of providing quality services to our patrons.

Key Responsibilities:

Assist patrons with learning how to use their devices from smart phones to laptops, and occasionally how to use basic computer programs.  Must be patient, and able to explain clearly how to use a device, or to answer patron questions so they can get the most out of their desktop, laptop, smart phone, laptop, smart watch etc.  Bilingual skills helpful but not required.  An ability to work with a wide array of age groups, but a special sensitivity for working with elders is important, as they are the ones most likely to make use of this service.  Ability to work in both android and apple products highly desired, with an above average understanding of the operating systems and how to navigate them on the various devices.

 The Chaplains provide crisis intervention services to the general public in case of major emergencies or a death in the field and support both fire and police line staff. The volunteer Chaplain team provides the city with 24/7 coverage, everyday of the year. 

All chaplains must attend the Oregon Chaplains Academy at the State Fire and Police Academy in Salem or The Essentials of Fire Chaplaincy by the Federation of Fire Chaplains, taught locally. Upon entering the program, the chaplain will be assigned a training task book with other assigned courses. Once the chaplain passes their training and mentoring, they serve at least two shifts a week, totaling at least 24 hours a week where they are on call and serve as the primary coverage chaplain and attend chaplain staff meetings every Wednesday morning.

Assist storyteller Librarian by helping set up the room, pass out namebadges, help attendees find a seat, help with the activities as directed by librarian and help clean up the space after the story.  This storytime is for babies, birth to 12 months.  

Be the first friendly face patrons see as they enter Brookwood Library. Volunteers welcome each patron as they enter and thank them as they leave.  You'll help with way finding, assist staff in occasional simple projects that can be done at the desk, and answer patron questions about library services.  Greeters share two hours per shift between hours of 10 AM-6 PM anytime library is open (occasional evening shift for an after hours event).  

This storytime is always focused on a science theme including a science based activity related to the story.  Volunteers assist with set up, and are proactive in assisting young attendees with the hands on science portion of the activity. Volunteers will assist with clean up afterwards. Volunteers should be prepared for a high degree of interaction, have patience, and the ability to know when to provide help to the little learners. All will be attending with an adult, but some adults are more engaged than others. Volunteers will support storyteller by making sure supplies are available and being safely used, and anticipating the needs to keep the activity components ready to go at all times.  Discovery Storytime alternates with Simple Science monthly alternating between both libraries.

Bring your creative vision to light by developing a themed maker cart to share with patrons, or engaging patrons in using the existing maker carts by providing patrons with instructions and encouragement to create a successful project.  Maker Cart programmers offer pop up programs in the Collaboratory during after school hours beginning September 2024.  Hours are Monday-Friday 2:45-5:00 PM or 4:30-7:00 PM.  Volunteers may overlap time, but sign up for only one shift segment.  Current maker cart themes include button making, puzzles, board games, needle felting, embroidery, origami, knitting, screen printing, ozobots, cubelets, scrapbooking, Lego Mindstorm, Chess, Rubik's Cubes, Friendship bracelets.  Maker Cart programmers may also design their own project to offer to patrons always with an eye on what our Collaboratory space has to use in terms of materials.  Volunteers stay in the maker space with their project while guiding patrons with instructions on how to do the project.  Instructions should be simple on a project that could be completed in a one-two hour block of time.  Instructions provided in writing and in person, and in both English and Spanish.  Volunteers creating a maker cart will be expected to make an example project and provide the instructions.  Volunteers using the current maker carts are expected to make an example following the provided instructions.  

Provide excellent customer service and support. use consignment software to tender purchases of handcrafted jewelry, clothing, and more. 

Our cozy evening storytime for toddlers.  Help the librarian welcome attendees, help them settle in, assist with presenting the story as directed by the librarian, then help clean up and put things away.  These story times are designed to be calming, if an activity is included it will be a simple activity that will not "wind the kids up".  You are encouraged to wear your footie pj's and bunny slippers!  

Join us in maintaining the beautiful Harold Eastman Rose Garden! This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, meet new people, and contribute to the community. No prior knowledge of deadheading roses is needed; instructions will be provided on-site.

Help people get their craft on!  Maker Mentors are crafty people themselves who thrive on helping others use the tools, equipment, and crafting supplies to explore their creative or artistic side! Maker Mentors learn the general safe operation of the various craft machines such as the button maker, sewing machines, heat press, 3-D printers, and digital die cutter.  From time to time new machines are introduced and you'll learn how to get people started on those too.  Other crafting tools include supplies to learn skills like beading, felting, scrapbooking, paper crafting, knitting, crocheting, weaving and more.  While it is not required to be proficient in a craft, it's helpful.  Your role as a maker mentor is to learn how to navigate the DIY written instructions and links to You Tube videos on the various equipment and tools, and to be able to help patrons understand the instructions so they can learn on their own.  You'll also help stock the craft supplies and carts, make sure the room is used safely, keep it tidy and welcoming, and if you are so inclined help someone learn to do what craft you might know.  

This storytime is always focused on a science theme including a science based activity related to the story.  Volunteers assist with set up, and are proactive in assisting young attendees with the hands on science portion of the activity. Volunteers will assist with clean up afterwards. Volunteers should be prepared for a high degree of interaction, have patience, and the ability to know when to provide help to the little learners. All will be attending with an adult, but some adults are more engaged than others. Volunteers will support storyteller by making sure supplies are available and being safely used, and anticipating the needs to keep the activity components ready to go at all times.  Discovery Storytime alternates with Simple Science monthly alternating between both libraries. 

Volunteer orientations are mandatory for all ongoing volunteers. At the orientation, volunteer responsibilities, scheduling, dress code, code of conduct, opportunities, and more will be discussed. A criminal background check is also part of the process and it must be completed prior to your first volunteer shift. 

All volunteer orientations are currently conducted virtually in a group setting. We will send out a Microsoft Teams meeting invitation the week of your scheduled volunteer orientation.
