Be the first friendly face patrons see as they enter Brookwood Library. Volunteers welcome each patron as they enter and thank them as they leave.  You'll help with way finding, assist staff in occasional simple projects that can be done at the desk, and answer patron questions about library services.  Greeters share two hours per shift between hours of 10 AM-6 PM anytime library is open (occasional evening shift for an after hours event).  

Help set up the chairs for this presentation on the world of Artificial Intelligence in Business.  After set up you'll greet attendees, keep a count of the number of people, then help put the chairs away at the end.  

Welcome participants and guide small group conversations, introduce simple discussion topics and activities, encouraging everyone to participate while creating a supportive environment for English learners of various skill levels.  This is an informal conversation hour, not a structured English language class,  hosts are here to provide a positive, welcoming, safe place for people to practice learning a new language.  An ability to patiently and positively support patrons is required, prior teaching or facilitation skills helpful but not required.  An overview of how to initiate and keep the conversations going will be provided.  Hosts may sometimes need to do a simple room set up which may include setting up chairs or tables and restacking the chairs, placing tables back in storage area at the end. 

This storytime is always focused on a science theme including a science based activity related to the story.  Volunteers assist with set up, and are proactive in assisting young attendees with the hands on science portion of the activity. Volunteers will assist with clean up afterwards. Volunteers should be prepared for a high degree of interaction, have patience, and the ability to know when to provide help to the little learners. All will be attending with an adult, but some adults are more engaged than others. Volunteers will support storyteller by making sure supplies are available and being safely used, and anticipating the needs to keep the activity components ready to go at all times.  Discovery Storytime alternates with Simple Science monthly alternating between both libraries. 

Assist patrons who drop in to use the Silhouette digital Die Cutter and the Heat Press to do creative projects.  Hosts need proficiency in using both machines and the ability to provide guidance and troubleshooting to the patrons who have stopped in to use the equipment.  Hosts will help patrons navigate Silhouette Studio, prepare and cut vinyl designs, weed and position materials and then safely use the heat press.  You'll also answer beginner questions, troubleshoot simple project issues, monitor equipment use, and assist with setting up the area and cleaning up afterwards.  Because this is a drop in option, you may have one person, you may have three or four, and sometimes you might not have anyone.  When it's just you, you have the opportunity to create something of your own.  Often when you are working on your own project, patrons will inquire, giving you the chance to engage them in trying something on their own.  Edgar will provide, (by arrangement) training to prepare you to faciliate these sessions, and make sure you understand using the Studio platform and the equipment.  

Volunteers provide patrons with one-on-one support with basic sewing skills including; pattern reading, fabric prep, machine set up, threading, hemming, and troubleshooting projects.  Volunteers encourage participants and maintain a positive, welcoming environment while insuring the safe use of the Collab's sewing equipment.  A proficient knowledge of sewing and sewing machine use is required.  Training on the use and operation of the library sewing machines will be provided.  This is a drop in "clinic", with no guarentee of how many people may stay by during the posted times.  When no patrons are using the service, volunteers should be prepared to work on a project of their own, as often that will inspire patrons to engage with you giving you the opportunity to promote the drop in sessions.  You may also answer questions about other Collaboratory services, you'll be provided a general overview of what the collaboratory offers.  You'll also help set up the sewing stations and clean up at the end. 

Simple science is a hands on mini science event held once a month alternating between the two libraries. Volunteers help the STEM librarian with setting up the science activity tables, helping patrons experience the hands on science, and then staying to clean up and put away the supplies.  These events typically attract older toddlers to about grade 3, are very popular, and can be somewhat chaotic and loud. Some parents are more engaged then others so volunteers must be proactive in looking for opportunities to help little learners who may not understand the concept and need help accomplishing the hands on task. Bilingual in Vietnamese helpful but not required, familiarity with assisting with our Library storytimes suggested.  You'll help with set up and clean up, hand out storytime supplies, and enthusiastically support the storyteller as she weaves her magic, you'll sing and clap along, maybe even encourage others to do a little dance.  Plus at the end of the storytime there will be a meet and greet with bunnies courtesy of Rose City Rabbit Rescue.  To keep the bunnies safe, this will be a "special" secret surprise for our storytime participants.  Volunteers are welcome to stay and help manage the lines of people who will want to meet and pet the bunnies.  

Help patrons celebrate this Asian cultural harvest festival also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival.  It is marked by the full moon symbolizing prosperity and good fortune.  You'll help with welcoming patrons, facilitating a simple craft, helping at the temporary tatoo station and cleaning up.  Volunteers must enjoy interacting with children and their families, and be comfortable participating in a sometimes loud and crowded room.  This is one of our most attended family cultural events, it gets bigger every year!  

Lots to do to turn the event room into an Asian heritage festival!  Come help decorate, set up tables, chairs, and activities.  Usually includes some crafty tasks like cutting things out, or light assembling of paper lanterns.  Some lifting (the heaviest would be the chairs which are a couple of pounds), bending, reaching, stretching.  Lots of being on your feet for a couple hours, but moving all the time.

An evening story time designed to be a bit more calming!  Feel free to dress in your favorite PJ's and slippers!  The Librarian will tell a quiet story and have a very calming activity or simple craft sometimes, but more often this storytime is designed to be calming and not super active.  Most attendees are toddler to Kindergarten.  This storytime alternates with our International language storytimes at Brookwood Library, and is usually held twice per month on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday nights. 

Help our patrons keep up with reading over the summer by hosting our summer reading program display at each library.  You'll explain how the summer reading program (SRP) works, help people understand how to use their reading log and help them pick out a free book to start them on their reading journey. It's busiest in June, so SRP volunteers are encouraged to help support our summer outreach and summer family events too during the rest of the summer.  The kiosk display remains through August.  Volunteers view online training prior to taking a shift at the display.  Shifts are two hours during open library hours with the busiest times typically 10 AM-4 PM.
