Help our Summer Reading Program kids harvest their "Plant a Seed" adventures with an epic end of Summer party at our Brookwood location Thursday August 20. Volunteers are needed to help set up activity stations, help put up signage, help greet and take tickets from attendees, facilitate activities, monitor the bouncy house, and help keep the activity areas tidy so clean up goes faster at the end...because everyone helps with clean up!  It happens rain or shine on the parking lot!  Dress for the weather, wear COMFORTABLE shoes, sunscreen and a big smile!

The U of O's Natural and Cultural History Museum brings their traveling outreach program to the library this summer with "BEE AMAZED".  Volunteers help the U of O outreach team as they provide information and hands on activities all about Oregon's 500 plus bee species!  Everyone will be buzzing!  They'll teach you what you need to know to facilitate your activity, and you'll get to learn some great stuff and interact with our patrons!  Volunteers also help with set up and take down.

Join the fun representing the library in the annual Hillsboro 4th of July Parade, the second largest parade in Oregon (only the Rose Festival beats us)!  Be part of the historical legacy of this community tradition.  You'll walk with the Library on the Loose van promoting the library!  You might wear a costume, you might throw candy, you might hold a sign, and you will be an enthusiastic representative promoting our Hillsboro Library!  The ability to walk the entire parade route (from Grant Street down 2nd Ave to Main to Cornell, back to Grant's Hare Field), keep a smile on your face, wave enthusiastically to the adoring crowd, wear your library tee shirt, lanyard, unless you are in an assigned costume, and report to the van's staging location (somewhere along Grant Street) by 8:30 AM on July 4.  Tons of fun and something you can say you've done (like building a rose festival float, ya gotta do it at least once as an Oregonian).  Pre parade snackage and beverages provided by the Volunteer engagement office.  Full details of where the staging area is, where you can park etc provided prior to the 4th.  

An evening story time designed to be a bit more calming!  Feel free to dress in your favorite PJ's and slippers!  The Librarian will tell a quiet story and have a very calming activity or simple craft sometimes, but more often this storytime is designed to be calming and not super active.  Most attendees are toddler to Kindergarten.  This storytime alternates with our International language storytimes at Brookwood Library, and is usually held twice per month on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday nights. 

Join the Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve team of volunteers to lead guided nature walks, assist with community outreach, help with community events, and more! This training will provide an introduction to Jackson Bottom's Nature Center and trails including sample guided walk scripts. You will also learn about our outreach opportunities and how you can be a part of the fun across the City. Parks Volunteer Orientation will be included as part of the program. Snacks provided. Enthusiastically inspire patrons to participate in our signature event, The Summer Reading Program!  Each year has a different theme, but the task is consistent.  Volunteers invite patrons to the table and share information about how to participate in the summer reading program.  Readers of all ages may participate, with slightly different forms for each sections (children, teens, adults).  Online training is provided giving you an overview of the year's process/theme.  Many patrons have done this for years, so just need to pick up their new reading log, and if they are children or teens, get a chance to select a free book!  If time allows, (Meaning you don't have another patron waiting for information) you'll help guide them through the different age categories for their free book.  (they don't have to pick a book from their age category, some of them may read above or below their age, so they can choose what they want).  Be sure to share with them the schedule of programs (outreach and in library) that go along with the summer theme.  (Details usually in the summer event guide, or on a handout you can give them).  Once they've completed their reading log, they'll bring it back and you, the volunteer, enthusiastically praise the accomplishment, have them (or the parent) fill out the short survey, and then award them their certificate, raffle ticket, and a ticket to the end of summer reading program party!  During downtimes, keep the shelves stocked and looking nice.  It's always a great idea to take a look at the various books so you can suggest things to the patrons.  It's always an opportunity to ask them if they have a library card, if they don't be sure you refer them to the librarians at the service desk so they can get one!  

Be the first friendly face patrons see as they enter Brookwood Library. Volunteers welcome each patron as they enter and thank them as they leave.  You'll help with way finding, assist staff in occasional simple projects that can be done at the desk, and answer patron questions about library services.  Greeters share two hours per shift between hours of 10 AM-6 PM anytime library is open (occasional evening shift for an after hours event).  

Join us in maintaining the beautiful Harold Eastman Rose Garden! This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, meet new people, and contribute to the community. No prior knowledge of deadheading roses is needed; instructions will be provided on-site.

Help with this hands on and "in" workshop with Pegasus Puppet Theater where youth will try out several different styles of puppets and learn how to bring them to life through movement and voice.  Kids will also learn how to construct their own rod puppet from simple materials.  Volunteers will help set up, help facilitate activities as directed by Pegasus Pupperteers, welcome/count our guests, and then clean up afterwards.

Sunday (formally Simple) Science is a hands on mini science event held once a month alternating between the two libraries. Volunteers help the STEM librarian with setting up the science activity tables, helping patrons experience the hands on science, and then staying to clean up and put away the supplies.  These events typically attract older toddlers to about grade 3, are very popular, and can be somewhat chaotic and loud. Some parents are more engaged then others so volunteers must be proactive in looking for opportunities to help little learners who may not understand the concept and need help accomplishing the hands on task. Support youth participants during the summer Youth Track Meet program by helping create a positive, organized, and encouraging environment for children and families. Volunteers will assist staff with event operations and activity stations while helping ensure participants have a fun and successful experience.

Shute Park Library offers Spanish language computer/technology skills classes for our patrons.  We're looking for a bi-lingual tech class helper to support our teacher and patrons during these classes.  No teaching experience needed, but you do need to be conversationally fluent in Spanish, be comfortable with basic computer skills, familiar with Chromebooks and Google Apps (Docs, gmail, drive), and have an ease working with people with varying backgrounds and skill levels.  

Our cooperative is celebrating it's 50th year!  They are celebrating at a number of member libraries with Shute Park the Hillsboro location.  It's a busy day for Shute Park with a lot of people expected, not only for this, but for the other events happening at the library that day.  We're looking for a couple of volunteers to help us do some light set up/clean up, and to host the refreshment table handing out some bagged snacks, maybe pouring a cup of lemonade, and generally welcoming people in.  You'll have some talking points and WCCLS staff or library staff will be on hand to answer questions about the Coop on how it provides Washington County with an amazing resource not found in many places.

Hillsboro’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. 

This 8-hour introductory course is offered in two, four-hour classes and is mostly in a classroom setting. This introductory course is open to anyone interested in learning how they can prepare for an emergency as well as those interested in becoming part of the Community Emergency Response Team.

Volunteers greet guests, scan tickets at the door, answer questions, and assist with light clean-up tasks at the end of the event (picking up litter, folding tablecloths, etc.).

Once ticket holders are checked in, you can even take a spin on the dance floor yourself!

Key Responsibilities:

Bring your creative vision to light by developing a themed maker cart to share with patrons, or engaging patrons in using the existing maker carts by providing patrons with instructions and encouragement to create a successful project.  Maker Cart programmers offer pop up programs in the Collaboratory during after school hours beginning September 2024.  Hours are Monday-Friday 2:45-5:00 PM or 4:30-7:00 PM.  Volunteers may overlap time, but sign up for only one shift segment.  Current maker cart themes include button making, puzzles, board games, needle felting, embroidery, origami, knitting, screen printing, ozobots, cubelets, scrapbooking, Lego Mindstorm, Chess, Rubik's Cubes, Friendship bracelets.  Maker Cart programmers may also design their own project to offer to patrons always with an eye on what our Collaboratory space has to use in terms of materials.  Volunteers stay in the maker space with their project while guiding patrons with instructions on how to do the project.  Instructions should be simple on a project that could be completed in a one-two hour block of time.  Instructions provided in writing and in person, and in both English and Spanish.  Volunteers creating a maker cart will be expected to make an example project and provide the instructions.  Volunteers using the current maker carts are expected to make an example following the provided instructions.  

Volunteer orientations are mandatory for all ongoing volunteers. At the orientation, volunteer responsibilities, scheduling, dress code, code of conduct, opportunities, and more will be discussed. A criminal background check is also part of the process and it must be completed prior to your first volunteer shift. 

All volunteer orientations are currently conducted virtually in a group setting. We will send out a Microsoft Teams meeting invitation the week of your scheduled volunteer orientation.

Assist storyteller Librarian by helping set up the room, pass out namebadges, help attendees find a seat, help with the activities as directed by librarian and help clean up the space after the story.  This storytime is for babies, birth to 12 months.  

Position Overview: Assist the Hostess in setting tables with glassware, silverware, sugar, and cream. For special occasions, may be asked to assist with decorations in the Dining Hall.

Key Responsibilities:

Join us for a day of family fun and community spirit at the SHARC Family Triathlon! This non-competitive event features swimming in the outdoor pool at SHARC, biking through the nearby neighborhood, and running around Shute Park. The Senior Center Greeter is the first point of contact for all visitors, providing a warm and welcoming environment to older adults, families, and community members. This role is crucial in ensuring that everyone who walks through the door feels seen, heard, and guided with respect and professionalism. As a Greeter, you will help create a positive and vibrant atmosphere by assisting guests in finding the events or activities they’re seeking, answering questions, and connecting them with additional resources or information as needed.

Your customer service skills, friendly demeanor, and passion for supporting the Hillsboro community will help you embody the mission and values of the City of Hillsboro. You will be a representative of the Senior Center’s dedication to fostering an inclusive, accessible, and supportive space for all.

Position Overview: Food Distribution Line volunteers are invaluable members of our team, playing a crucial role in the post-lunch food distribution of donated foods at the City of Hillsboro. In this registered volunteer position, Ambassadors are responsible for sorting foods from boxes to ice bins or reorganizing foods to facilitate easy patron choice selection. Please note that some food boxes may individually weigh as much as 20 pounds, which may limit some volunteers during this part of the process.

Position Overview: The Hillsboro Community Senior Center receives donations from Trader Joe’s on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and New Seasons Market every Tuesday. Volunteer drivers use City of Hillsboro vehicles. Employees at the stores can help move donations into the trunk. Unloading typically ends around 10 am at the Community Senior Center.

Position Overview: As a Hostess Volunteer, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our weekday lunch service. Your primary responsibilities will include handling lunch payments, distributing place mats, and managing the cash box. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the well-being of our community and support our mission of providing quality services to our patrons.

Key Responsibilities:

Position Overview: Volunteers are needed to serve meals, monitor the salad bar, assist the hostess with seating, keep the beverage station stocked, and work with kitchen staff to ensure all patrons are served in a timely, effective manner. A commitment of once per week is preferred.
