Help our Summer Reading Program kids harvest their "Plant a Seed" adventures with an epic end of Summer party at our Brookwood location Thursday August 20. Volunteers are needed to help set up activity stations, help put up signage, help greet and take tickets from attendees, facilitate activities, monitor the bouncy house, and help keep the activity areas tidy so clean up goes faster at the end...because everyone helps with clean up!  It happens rain or shine on the parking lot!  Dress for the weather, wear COMFORTABLE shoes, sunscreen and a big smile!

The U of O's Natural and Cultural History Museum brings their traveling outreach program to the library this summer with "BEE AMAZED".  Volunteers help the U of O outreach team as they provide information and hands on activities all about Oregon's 500 plus bee species!  Everyone will be buzzing!  They'll teach you what you need to know to facilitate your activity, and you'll get to learn some great stuff and interact with our patrons!  Volunteers also help with set up and take down. 

An evening story time designed to be a bit more calming!  Feel free to dress in your favorite PJ's and slippers!  The Librarian will tell a quiet story and have a very calming activity or simple craft sometimes, but more often this storytime is designed to be calming and not super active.  Most attendees are toddler to Kindergarten.  This storytime alternates with our International language storytimes at Brookwood Library, and is usually held twice per month on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday nights. 

Volunteers who have completed all the steps to becoming a library volunteer including,  interview, background check, signed waivers, and online orientation attend an in person walk through at the Library they will most often volunteer.  This is required of all volunteers accepted into the Library on-going volunteer program. 

Be the first friendly face patrons see as they enter Brookwood Library. Volunteers welcome each patron as they enter and thank them as they leave.  You'll help with way finding, assist staff in occasional simple projects that can be done at the desk, and answer patron questions about library services.  Greeters share two hours per shift between hours of 10 AM-6 PM anytime library is open (occasional evening shift for an after hours event).  

This storytime is always focused on a science theme including a science based activity related to the story.  Volunteers assist with set up, and are proactive in assisting young attendees with the hands on science portion of the activity. Volunteers will assist with clean up afterwards. Volunteers should be prepared for a high degree of interaction, have patience, and the ability to know when to provide help to the little learners. All will be attending with an adult, but some adults are more engaged than others. Volunteers will support storyteller by making sure supplies are available and being safely used, and anticipating the needs to keep the activity components ready to go at all times.  Discovery Storytime alternates with Simple Science monthly alternating between both libraries. 

Help with this hands on and "in" workshop with Pegasus Puppet Theater where youth will try out several different styles of puppets and learn how to bring them to life through movement and voice.  Kids will also learn how to construct their own rod puppet from simple materials.  Volunteers will help set up, help facilitate activities as directed by Pegasus Pupperteers, welcome/count our guests, and then clean up afterwards.  

Help our Summer Reading Program kids wrap up their Level Up adventures with an epic end of Summer party at our Brookwood location Thursday August 20th. Volunteers are needed to help set up activity stations, help put up signage, help greet and take tickets from attendees, facilitate activities, and keep the activity areas tidy so clean up goes faster at the end...because everyone helps with clean up!  This is one of the largest events of the year for the library community.  Expect lots of happy kids and their tag-along parents!  This event is scheduled to be outside on the south side Parking lot.  

Simple science is a hands on mini science event held once a month alternating between the two libraries. Volunteers help the STEM librarian with setting up the science activity tables, helping patrons experience the hands on science, and then staying to clean up and put away the supplies.  These events typically attract older toddlers to about grade 3, are very popular, and can be somewhat chaotic and loud. Some parents are more engaged then others so volunteers must be proactive in looking for opportunities to help little learners who may not understand the concept and need help accomplishing the hands on task. Help make the magic of story time happen!  Helpers assist with setting up the story space, sometimes prepping make and take materials a head of time (by arrangement), welcoming patrons in the room, helping them find a place to sit, then helping the story teller engage the guests in the story!  You'll do the hand gestures, sing the songs, act things out right along with the librarian leading the story time.  You'll help with the make and take activity then help say goodbye to patrons and help clean up the space.

Help our patrons keep up with reading over the summer by hosting our summer reading program display at each library.  You'll explain how the summer reading program (SRP) works, help people understand how to use their reading log and help them pick out a free book to start them on their reading journey. It's busiest in June, so SRP volunteers are encouraged to help support our summer outreach and summer family events too during the rest of the summer.  The kiosk display remains through August.  Volunteers view online training prior to taking a shift at the display.  Shifts are two hours during open library hours with the busiest times typically 10 AM-4 PM.
