What We Do
The Hillsboro Chaplain program is the only joint division between Hillsboro Police and Hillsboro Fire. Hillsboro Police provides logistics support, while Hillsboro Fire provides management of the division. The chaplains provide crisis intervention services to the general public in case of major emergencies or a death in the field and support to both fire and police line staff.
Our chaplains are trained in:
- Crisis intervention after a death or major event
- Death notifications
- Basic Fire and Police operations
- Assisting people who have lost a loved one.
- Assisting people after a house fire
- Basic emergency counseling
- Working with people of other cultures and faiths
The volunteer chaplain team provides the city with 24/7/365 coverage, being dispatched directly to 911 calls.
All chaplains must attend the Oregon Chaplains Academy at the State Fire and Police Academy in Salem or The Essentials of Fire Chaplaincy by the Federation of Fire Chaplains, taught locally. Upon entering the program, the chaplain will be assigned a training task book with other assigned courses. Once the chaplain passes their training and mentoring, they serve at least two shifts a week, totaling at least 24 hours where they are on call and serve as the primary coverage chaplain.
