Who We Are
Who We Are
Volunteers are an important part of the Hillsboro Public Library team. Every year, hundreds of volunteers contribute their time and talents to the Library, gaining new skills and getting a behind-the-scenes view of the Library, while helping the Library fulfill our "For Everyone" mission.
Volunteers tackle a variety of projects, including:
- Spreading joy, learning, and fun during story times and Library events
- Sharing excitement about libraries at Outreach efforts
- Inspiring creativity as a Maker Mentor in the Collaboratory
- Helping elementary students succeed as a homework helper
- Helping people learn more about technology as a Tech Helper
- Giving used books a second chance as a Friend of the Library
- Welcoming library users as a Greeter or hosting art gallery receptions
- Keeping materials moving in our circulation departments
Recruitment for volunteers is on pause at this time, please visit our Library Volunteer webpage: https://www.hillsboro-oregon.gov/our-city/departments/library/about-the-library/volunteer for updates on when our recruitments will re-open. All volunteer positions require an application, background check, volunteer orientation and task specific training. The above link provides details on our process.
What We Do
Adult Shute Park Opportunities:
Collaboratory/Maker Mentors
If you love crafting and helping people learn how to use various crafting tools from crochet hooks to 3-D Printers, this is a great opportunity! We’re looking for customer service-oriented people who do have some crafting abilities but can also learn how to help people navigate the DIY manuals of the various tools in the maker spaces. Our greatest need is to help with our after school programs weekdays as a Maker Cart programmer. You'll help keep the craft carts stocked, help students safely use the items on the cart, and provide help on using the items on the cart.
Story Time Helpers
Support our Librarian story tellers during morning story time events by helping set up the room, greeting and seating patrons as they arrive, facilitating hands on activities, encouraging fun and excitement, and helping to clean up afterwards.
- Most story times are weekday mornings with a volunteer shift from 9:45 to 11 am.
- On Sundays special story times with a science focus are held in the afternoons alternating between the two libraries.
- Once a month at each library is a Wednesday evening Pajama story time.
Family Event Helpers
Support our Library program staff by helping set up our special family events including setting up tables and chairs, laying out craft supplies, and decorating the room, then assist with facilitating the hands on activities, or serve as a greeter welcoming patrons and keeping an accurate count of the number of people attending, then help clean up afterwards. Great customer service skills and a love for working with children of all ages essential. Most family events happen on weekend days, occasional Friday nights, and weekday afternoons during holiday break periods. Most shifts are 3-4 hours long depending on the event.
