Who We Are

Volunteers are an important part of the Hillsboro Public Library team. Every year, hundreds of volunteers contribute their time and talents to the Library, gaining new skills and getting a behind-the-scenes view of the Library, while helping the Library fulfill our "For Everyone" mission.

Volunteers tackle a variety of projects, including:

  • Spreading joy, learning, and fun during storytimes and Library events
  • Sharing excitement about libraries at Outreach efforts
  • Inspiring creativity as a Maker Mentor in the Collaboratory
  • Helping people learn more about technology as a Tech Helper
  • Giving used books a second chance as a Friend of the Library
  • Welcoming library users as a Greeter or hosting art gallery receptions

What We Do

Collaboratory/Maker Mentors

Our creative spaces are a place for people to access a variety of resources and tools such as 3_D printers, digital die cutters, sewing machines and more.  Volunteers assist patrons in learning to use the do it yourself manuals and provide guidance on the safe and best uses of the various equipment in the rooms, while keeping the space well stocked, neat, and ready for patron use.  After general volunteer orientation, maker mentors receive training on the various equipment in the maker spaces. Suggested donation is weekly or twice per month in a 2-3 hour shift rotation.

Story Time Helpers

Support our Librarian story tellers during morning story time events by helping set up the room, greeting and seating patrons as they arrive, facilitating hands on activities, encouraging fun and excitement and helping to clean up afterwards.
  • Most story times are weekday mornings with a volunteer shift from 9:45 to 11 am.
  • On Sundays special story times with a science focus are held in the afternoons alternating between the two libraries.
  • Once a month at each library is a Wednesday evening Pajama story time.

Greeters

Welcome patrons into our Brookwood Library lobby, answer their questions, and do small projects as needed. Outgoing, friendly people who can cheerfully engage with patrons of all ages are the first impression in our welcome space. The Greeter Station is hosted during open library hours, 10 am to 4 pm in two-hour shifts, suggested volunteer donation: 2 to 4 shifts per month.

Event Team Innovators/Facilitators

The ideal opportunity for people who love to be part of epic, talk of the town, inspiring events for all ages. Our librarians have great ideas for all types of events and are searching for a team of people who thrive on bringing dreams to reality!

Innovators

As an innovator you’ll work behind the scenes to help the librarians design their family or adult focused themed events. For family events you may help design the décor, or come up with hands-on activities or learning adventures for patrons of all ages. Working with an adult themed event you might help transform kid’s activities to something adults would enjoy, track down an engaging presenter, or work on décor.

Facilitators

As a facilitator, you’ll be part of the team keeping the event lively, engaging, and fun. You will assist with hosting activities, bringing on the “happy” through greeting and interacting with patrons of all ages, or easily troubleshooting “in the moment” event detours (like running out of glitter or sparkles!). This is a very flexible opportunity with many options to volunteer at both library locations during prep parties and brainstorms. Most adult events are evenings and family events are usually Friday nights or Saturdays. Open to ages teen to adult.
