Who We Are
The Friends of the Hillsboro Public Library are an independent non-profit 501 c 3 organization with a mission to provide additional financial support the Hillsboro Public Libraries through the sale of donated and no longer circulating books and other materials. The Friends have offices in the Brookwood Library branch. The Friends are an all-volunteer organization, with one paid Director. They have been involved with the libraries for over 40 years raising thousands of dollars to support programs and the purchase of supplemental equipment and supplies that may not be covered through the budget cycles of the City.
What We Do
The Friends of the Library receive donated books, DVD's, CD's, Blu Rays, puzzles, games, and other items (with the exception of clothing) from the public to re-sell to raise money for the libraries. They also receive books and other media no longer circulating from the libraries to potentially sell to raise money or to be donated to other organizations needing to supplement their library offerings. The Friends sell their items online through Amazon and Ebay, primarily, and also operate a small bookstore at the Brookwood branch, and a small offsite location in downtown Hillsboro. In addition they operate two large public sales in spring and fall at the Brookwood branch, and occasionally a large booth at the Washington County Fair. Volunteers help by evaluating items for sale, preparing books for sale, preparing books for recycling, shipping items, listing items online, and setting up and staffing the book sales. Volunteers also assist in the Brookwood Coffee Court retail space interacting with patrons, stocking shelves, running the cash register, and providing general information to shoppers about the Friends or the library in general.
