Location: Senior Center, City of Hillsboro, OR
Reports To: Senior Center Administrative Support Specialist

Position Overview

The Library & Game Collection Organizer helps maintain the Senior Center's Little Library and community game collection, ensuring they remain clean, organized, welcoming, and enjoyable for all visitors. This volunteer role supports literacy, lifelong learning, and social engagement by keeping books and games in good condition, neatly displayed, and appropriate for the Senior Center community.

As part of this once-a-week volunteer opportunity, you will help organize books, remove damaged or inappropriate materials, dust shelves, arrange games, and create an inviting space that encourages seniors to browse, borrow, and enjoy the collection. Your attention to detail and commitment to providing a welcoming environment will help support the City of Hillsboro's mission of fostering an inclusive and engaging community for older adults.

Key Responsibilities

Organize the Little Library:

  • Sort and organize books by category, genre, or author to create an easy-to-browse collection.
  • Ensure books are neatly displayed and shelves remain orderly.
  • Remove damaged, outdated, or inappropriate materials and notify staff when replacements or donations may be needed.
  • Help ensure the library contains Senior Center-approved reading materials.

Maintain the Library Area:

  • Dust bookshelves, book displays, and surrounding furniture.
  • Keep the Little Library clean, tidy, and welcoming.
  • Straighten books and displays throughout each volunteer shift.

Organize the Game Collection:

  • Sort and organize board games, puzzles, and recreational activities.
  • Ensure game pieces, cards, and accessories are complete whenever possible.
  • Remove damaged or unusable games and notify staff of missing pieces or replacement needs.
  • Arrange games in a manner that is accessible and easy for participants to find.

Support a Welcoming Environment:

  • Help create an inviting space that encourages reading, recreation, and social interaction.
  • Maintain an organized appearance that reflects the Senior Center's commitment to providing a positive experience for all visitors.

Collaborate with Staff & Volunteers:

  • Communicate with Senior Center staff regarding donation needs, damaged materials, or organizational improvements.
  • Assist with occasional seasonal library refreshes or reorganizations as needed.

Support Mission & Values:

  • Contribute to an environment that reflects the City of Hillsboro's values of respect, service, integrity, and innovation.
  • Help ensure the Little Library and game collection remain inclusive, accessible, and welcoming for all community members.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Previous volunteer, library, retail, or organizational experience is helpful but not required.

Skills:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and follow established guidelines.
  • Good communication skills and willingness to collaborate with staff.

Traits:

  • Friendly, dependable, and self-motivated.
  • Enjoys organizing, reading, or creating welcoming community spaces.
  • Appreciates serving older adults and supporting lifelong learning and recreation.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to bend, reach, and stand for portions of the volunteer shift.
  • Ability to lift and carry books, games, or storage bins weighing up to approximately 20 pounds.
  • Comfortable performing light cleaning tasks such as dusting and organizing shelves.

Schedule

  • Commitment: Once per week
  • Flexible scheduling available during Senior Center operating hours.
